How to Cope with Post-holiday Blues: Getting back to Work after Christmas & New Year Holidays

Need some motivation when it comes to getting back to work after the holidays? Well, it’s time to take some notes now 😊

  • Instead of setting goals, set up a system for the new year. Every motivational speaker is talking about “goal-setting”. I understand that could be helpful, but frankly, goal-setting can only take you so far. Nathan Latka famously said, “Real high-achievers don’t even set goals; they set up systems In contrast, wannabes set goals because that’s what they’ve been taught.” I know this isn’t the prettiest statement in the world, but it’s just the unpleasant realism. I don’t think the elite literally set goals after establishing systems that work for them. Now you may wonder, “How can this new concept work for me?” Well, in reality, this is how it works: Instead of writing down “I want to make AU$80,000 this year”, you will create a career system which includes: 1) your job; 2) your side hustle; 3) your investments. In this system, you will see that your job is a stable income stream, so this sub-system is automated in its own way; your side hustle may require you to look for clients, so this sub-system has two components: A) working with clients; B) looking for new clients. As to your investments, it can be automated with the help of a financial planner. Clarity and certainty can eliminate 95% of your stress in your career. Once you have a powerful system, you don’t even need to worry about “goals” anymore. By the way, most people’s goals keep changing anyway!
  • Do the most challenging task first every morning. Before you go to bed at night, you should plan your tasks for the next day. Ideally, you’d better wake up without the need to make any decisions every morning. When you are planning your tasks for the next day, make sure you will do the most challenging task first thing in the morning. If you think talking to the difficult customer on the phone is hard, call that customer first! If you think writing a marketing email is hard, write that email first! After completing the most challenging task, you will feel energised throughout the day.
  • Prioritise your health and wellbeing. When people are busy, they tend to forget about their health and wellbeing. But you won’t make this mistake. In the new year, you will make health and wellbeing your No. 1 priority because this is the foundation of your career success. You don’t have to meditate for one hour every day if you don’t have time for that. You can simply go to bed earlier, eat healthy food and exercise on a daily basis – these habits will build a strong body and mindset ready for any career success.
